Originally used as "finger bowls" at formal dinners, particularly after courses involving food like shellfish, crustaceans, or fruit.  Guests would dip their fingers into the bowls, which were often filled with scented water, lemon, or a flower to remove oils and grease before wiping them on their napkins.  

Nowadays, these lovely bowls can be used to serve a cold soup, a delicious dip or to hold small flower arrangements for multiple tables or to be used in the center of a long table.
